Abstract
Because of market conditions, an increased focus on profits and heightened needs for improved customer service, many organizations are restructuring their work around self-directed work teams. These teams are working on the key drivers of the business, they are involved with the end-to-end production processes and are responsible for improving customer service. The study described in this report looks at current organizational changes in the newspaper industry. Specifically, team based organizational shifts. Participants reported real and perceived barriers to organizational change. Significant barriers identified were communication and training. Implications of the survey findings are that organizations that are involved in substantial organizational change are not addressing the barriers and as a result are sub-optimizing their change efforts.
